Troy Lesesne Takes Over as Coach of D.C. United

In a surprising turn of events, Troy Lesesne has been named as the new coach of D.C. United, replacing Wayne Rooney. This decision comes just two months after Lesesne was fired by the New York Red Bulls. The 40-year-old coach has signed a three-year contract with D.C. United, signaling a new chapter for the team.

Speaking about his new role, Lesesne expressed his excitement to connect with the passionate supporters of D.C. United. In a team statement, he stated, “This club has been a staple in this league since its inception in 1996. I know how passionate our supporters are and I look forward to connecting with them and delivering the results that they deserve.”

Lesesne also expressed his optimism regarding the future of the team. After discussions with general manager and chief soccer officer, Ally Mackay, as well as the ownership, he believes that D.C. United has the necessary infrastructure and investment to reach new heights.

Taking over the New York Red Bulls midseason was no easy task for Lesesne. However, he managed to steer the team from last place to the playoffs, finishing eighth in the Eastern Conference. While they ultimately fell short in the first round, Lesesne proved his capabilities as a coach.

Before his stint with the Red Bulls, Lesesne had a diverse coaching career. He led New Mexico United in the second-tier United Soccer League Championship from 2018 to 2021. Subsequently, he joined the Red Bulls as an assistant coach in January 2022. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston and with the Charleston Battery and Charlotte Independence in the lower tiers of American soccer.

Lesesne’s appointment comes after the hiring of former Nashville SC assistant general manager, Ally Mackay. The club believes that Lesesne’s high-pressing tactical approach and player-first managerial style align with their vision for the team. Mackay stated, “Troy has an impressive pedigree in American soccer and has worked at all levels of the soccer pyramid in this country.”

Wayne Rooney, the former England star, was appointed as the coach of D.C. United in July 2022. However, after a mixed season that resulted in D.C. United missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, Rooney was let go. He later joined Birmingham City in England’s League Championship but was ultimately relieved of his managerial duties.

With Lesesne now at the helm, D.C. United looks to turn the page on past disappointments and embark on a new and exciting chapter. The team aims to build on their legacy as one of the founding clubs of Major League Soccer and deliver success to their loyal fanbase.

There is no denying that Lesesne faces significant challenges ahead. He and the team have a busy few weeks ahead as they prepare for the upcoming 2024 season. However, with his experience and the support of the management and ownership, Lesesne is ready to tackle the obstacles and start building a winning culture within D.C. United.

Troy Lesesne’s appointment as the new coach of D.C. United marks the beginning of a new era for the team. With a strong belief in the potential of the club and the support of the passionate fanbase, Lesesne is determined to bring success to D.C. United. The journey ahead may be challenging, but the club’s vision and the coach’s expertise provide a promising outlook for the future. It’s a fresh start for D.C. United, and the team, the fans, and Lesesne himself are ready to embrace the journey ahead.
