The San Jose Earthquakes Secure Argentine Playmaker for Record Transfer Fee

The San Jose Earthquakes have made a significant move by signing Argentine attacking midfielder Hernan Lopez to a designated player contract. Sources have confirmed that the club paid a record transfer fee of approximately $6 million, which could potentially rise to $7 million if certain incentives are met. This transfer fee surpasses the previous club record of $2.9 million for Carlos Gruezo.

Lopez’s contract with the Earthquakes runs through the end of the 2026 season, with club options for both 2027 and 2028. The deal is contingent on the acquisition of Lopez’s International Transfer Certificate, which is expected to be completed before the closing of the MLS primary transfer window on April 23. It is interesting to note that Lopez is the great-nephew of the iconic Argentine footballer, Diego Maradona.

With the San Jose Earthquakes struggling with just three points from nine league matches, the addition of Lopez comes at a crucial time. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder will be expected to provide creative support to the team’s forwards and wingers. He will likely be tasked with supplying key passes to players such as Cristian Espinoza, Amahl Pellegrino, Preston Judd, and Jeremy Ebobisse.

Lopez arrives in San Jose after stints with Godoy Cruz, where he scored seven goals in 51 league and cup appearances over two seasons. Prior to his time at Godoy Cruz, Lopez started his professional career with River Plate in 2019, having come through the club’s academy system since 2014. While Lopez was technically on loan with Godoy Cruz, his player rights were split between the club and River Plate.

The San Jose Earthquakes have made a bold move by signing Hernan Lopez to bolster their midfield and attacking options. The record transfer fee signifies the club’s commitment to improving its squad and achieving success in the MLS. Lopez’s arrival brings hope to the Earthquakes and their supporters as they aim to turn around their disappointing start to the season.
