The Colorado Rapids sign Djordje Mihailovic from AZ Alkmaar

The Colorado Rapids have made another significant addition to their squad during the current MLS offseason. The club recently announced the signing of midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. This move follows the earlier transfer of U.S. goalkeeper Zack Steffen from Manchester City.

A difficult spell in Europe for Mihailovic

After making the switch to Europe from CF Montreal in January 2023, Mihailovic faced difficulties in establishing himself in the Eredivisie. The 25-year-old midfielder has only started eight league games for AZ, with his playing time limited to just three matches this season. In a recent interview with ESPN, AZ manager Pascal Jansen admitted that the move did not work out as expected. However, he mentioned that Mihailovic’s decision to return to the U.S. was made in consultation with the club and due to personal circumstances outside of football.

Prior to his time in Europe, Djordje Mihailovic made a name for himself with the Chicago Fire in MLS. He emerged from the club’s academy and made his professional debut in 2017. The talented midfielder truly showcased his abilities after joining CF Montreal before the start of the 2021 season. During his two seasons with Montreal, Mihailovic recorded an impressive tally of 15 goals and 23 assists. His outstanding performances earned him recognition at the national level, with 11 appearances for the United States Men’s National Team and three goals to his name.

The Rapids’ offseason revamp

The signing of Mihailovic is part of the Colorado Rapids’ efforts to rebuild their squad following a disappointing last-placed finish in the Western Conference in 2023. Along with player acquisitions, the club has also made changes in the coaching staff by appointing Chris Armas as the new head coach. The Rapids are determined to improve their performance in the upcoming season and believe that Mihailovic’s addition will contribute to their resurgence.

Djordje Mihailovic’s signing comes with the prestigious designation of being a designated player for the Colorado Rapids. As a designated player, he is expected to make a significant impact on the team’s performance and elevate their playing level. The pressure to succeed will be high, but Mihailovic has demonstrated his potential during his time in MLS and with the national team.

The Colorado Rapids have secured the signing of Djordje Mihailovic from AZ Alkmaar. The midfielder’s return to the U.S. marks a fresh start for him after a challenging stint in Europe. With an impressive MLS career behind him and the experience of representing his country, Mihailovic brings valuable skills to the Rapids. The club hopes that the addition of Mihailovic, along with other offseason changes, will help them emerge as a strong contender in the upcoming MLS season.
