Giorgio Chiellini Returns to LAFC as Player Development Coach

Giorgio Chiellini, the renowned Italian footballer, has decided to come out of retirement and join LAFC as a player development coach. This surprising announcement comes a mere month after Chiellini officially announced his retirement from professional football. With his vast experience and expertise, Chiellini is set to work closely with coach Steve Cherundolo in the development of the team’s first-team players.

LAFC’s team co-president and general manager, John Thorrington, expressed his gratitude for Chiellini’s contribution as a player and his eagerness to incorporate him into the coaching staff. Thorrington stated, “We were thankful to have Giorgio play the final 18 months of his playing career with LAFC. During that time, he proved what an asset he is for LAFC in a number of ways…”

Giorgio Chiellini played his final match in the MLS Cup, where LAFC suffered a 2-1 defeat against Columbus Crew. This marked the end of his illustrious playing career, which featured successful stints with Juventus in Italy and the national team. Notably, Chiellini was part of nine title-winning sides at the club level and played a significant role in Italy’s triumph in Euro 2020.

Shortly after his retirement decision, it became apparent that Chiellini intended to stay in the United States until the summer to allow his daughter to complete the school year. LAFC’s press release, however, does not provide specifics regarding the duration of Chiellini’s service as a player development coach. It is evident, though, that the club recognizes Chiellini’s invaluable knowledge and leadership qualities, making him an excellent addition to the coaching staff for the upcoming season.

As LAFC gears up for the new MLS season, which commences on February 24th, with a home match against Seattle Sounders FC, the addition of Giorgio Chiellini brings excitement and anticipation. His presence on the coaching staff will undoubtedly enhance the team’s performance and assist in nurturing young talent within the squad.

Giorgio Chiellini’s decision to transition from player to coach demonstrates his ongoing commitment to the sport and his desire to contribute to its development. LAFC has recognized Chiellini’s exceptional abilities and chosen to capitalize on his football acumen and leadership skills. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the presence of Chiellini promises a new era of growth and success for LAFC.
