Gerardo Martino Confirms Lionel Messi’s Full Recovery Ahead of MLS Opener

Inter Miami coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has reassured fans that Lionel Messi has fully recovered from his injury concerns. Despite struggling with a groin problem during the team’s international tour, Messi started in their final preseason game against Newell’s Old Boys and seemed to be in good form. Martino expressed his confidence in Messi’s recovery, stating that they are gradually easing him back into full match fitness in preparation for their upcoming MLS debut.

Messi missed a preseason win in Hong Kong on Feb. 4 due to nagging injuries, particularly a groin issue. Fans were disappointed to see him on the bench for the entire game, leading to demands for refunds. However, Martino emphasized that the team’s priority is to ensure that Messi is fully fit and ready for the league opener on the 21st, hence the careful approach in managing his playing time during preseason.

Despite the injury setbacks, Messi put on a strong performance in the preseason game against Newell’s, drawing praise from Martino. The coach applauded Messi’s teamwork and goal-scoring opportunities, highlighting the importance of this match in preparing the team for the upcoming season opener. The game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was emotionally significant for both Messi and Martino.

For Messi, facing his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys was a nostalgic experience. Having supported the club in his youth and played for them before moving to Barcelona, Messi expressed his sentiments on Instagram after the game. Similarly, Martino, who played and coached at Newell’s, had a special connection with the club and cherished the opportunity to reunite with former teammates and fans.

The game against Inter Miami was also meaningful for the Newell’s Old Boys players, as they had the chance to compete against their hero, Lionel Messi. Coach Mauricio Larriera acknowledged that the match provided valuable minutes for their young players and commended the experience of playing against a footballing legend like Messi. Overall, the game served as a platform for mutual respect and admiration between the two teams.
