Athletic Club Celebrates Copa del Rey Triumph with River Boat Parade

The streets of Bilbao were flooded with hundreds of thousands of fans on Thursday to partake in the celebration of Athletic Club’s Copa del Rey victory. This significant win, achieved after a penalty shootout against Mallorca, marked the club’s first major trophy in 40 years.

Traditionally, Athletic Club celebrates their triumphs by cruising down the Nervion river on their barge, ‘La Gabarra.’ The procession began in the port of Getxo and culminated at the Town Hall in the center of Bilbao. Fans eagerly took part in the event by chartering over 150 smaller boats to follow the players’ barge along the river. Notably, former Athletic defender Iñigo Martinez was among the fans who seized the opportunity to celebrate with his former club.

The festivities were met with immense enthusiasm from fans and players alike. School closures and early arrival of fans along the river banks indicated the magnitude of this historic celebration. The current squad paid homage to the club’s previous victories by sporting replica jerseys from 40 years ago, symbolizing the rich history of Athletic Club.

Athletic Club’s captain, Iker Muniain, expressed the sentiment shared by many present at the celebration – that this victory was one for the ages. Forward Iñaki Williams eloquently captured the essence of the moment by dedicating the win to all those who have been associated with the club, past and present.

The enormity of the event necessitated a significant security presence, with over 1,200 individuals, including 700 police officers, ensuring the safety of the event. Despite the challenges posed by managing such a large gathering, local authorities reported that the celebrations went smoothly.

Athletic Club’s Copa del Rey triumph was not just a victory on the field, but a momentous occasion that brought together fans, players, and the city of Bilbao in a shared sense of pride and joy. The river boat parade served as a symbol of tradition and history, as well as a reminder of the club’s resilience and unwavering spirit throughout the years.
