LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo was fined $10,000 by Major League Soccer for his comments regarding the game against Real Salt Lake played in adverse weather conditions. The league stated that Cherundolo’s remarks were in violation of the public criticism policy outlined in the 2024 competition manual, which aims to protect the public image and reputation of MLS and its clubs.
The game in Sandy, Utah, saw its start delayed by two hours due to snow and lightning, with a further interruption of 3 1/2 minutes in the match because of the weather conditions. Cherundolo expressed his discontent with the decision to proceed with the game, calling it “impossible conditions” and “an absolute joke”. He went on to describe it as one of the worst professional sporting events he had ever witnessed, emphasizing the safety concerns for the players.
Steve Cherundolo, 45, is currently in his third season as the coach of LAFC, having led the team to the MLS title in 2022. A former defender, Cherundolo played for Hannover in Germany from 1998 to 2014 and represented the United States in two World Cups. Despite his successful career as a player and coach, his recent comments have garnered attention and resulted in disciplinary action from the league.
