Artem Dovbyk Emerges as LaLiga Top Scorer

Girona forward Artem Dovbyk has secured the position of LaLiga’s top scorer with an impressive total of 24 goals. His closest competitor, Villarreal striker Alexander Sørloth, fell short by just one goal, finishing the season with 23 goals. Sørloth had a final opportunity to match Dovbyk’s tally during Villarreal’s last game against Osasuna but was unable to find the back of the net after sustaining a leg injury early in the match.

Prior to his phenomenal performance in claiming the top scorer title, Dovbyk was trailing Sørloth by two goals in the race. However, he delivered a stunning hat trick in a 7-0 victory over Granada, propelling him to the forefront of the goal-scoring charts. Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham follows closely behind with 19 goals, with the league champions set to play Real Betis later. Robert Lewandowski is also in the mix with 18 goals as Barcelona prepares to face Sevilla in Xavi Hernández’s final game in charge.

Dovbyk’s journey to becoming LaLiga’s top scorer began when he joined Girona last summer from Ukrainian club SC Dnipro-1. His contributions played a pivotal role in transforming the small Catalan club into a European sensation this season. Girona, partially owned by Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi ownership, secured a historic third-place finish in the league, earning them a spot in the Champions League for the first time.

In their last game of the season, Villarreal settled for a 1-1 draw against Osasuna, with Sørloth’s replacement, José Luis Morales, scoring an equalizer in the second half. Osasuna’s Ante Budimir netted his first goal since recovering from fractured ribs, finishing the season with 17 goals. Despite their efforts, Villarreal ended the league in eighth place, narrowly missing out on a Europa Conference League berth.

Villarreal’s Álex Baena leads the league in assists, setting up 14 goals throughout the season, a feat that ties a club record previously held by Juan Riquelme. Additionally, the match against Osasuna marked the farewell of coach Jagoba Arrasate, who departed after six years with the club. Arrasate, who guided Osasuna back to the top flight and led them to the Copa del Rey final in 2023, declined a contract extension in favor of pursuing a new chapter in his coaching career.
