Inter Miami CF Head Coach Tata Martino Discusses Roster Restrictions

Inter Miami CF head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino recently addressed the challenges faced by the team due to Major League Soccer’s strict roster rules. Despite rumors of potential signings like Benfica forward Ángel Di María and Boca Juniors goalkeeper Sergio Romero, Martino emphasized the financial and legal constraints that prevent such acquisitions.

In a statement to Paraguayan radio Monumental AM 1080, Martino expressed his reservations about the feasibility of bringing in high-profile players like Di María, citing the league’s economic restrictions and compliance with roster regulations. While reports indicated discussions about signing Di María after his contract with Benfica expired, Martino clarified that no official communication had been received from the sports director regarding the player’s potential transfer.

Martino’s concerns about Major League Soccer’s roster limitations stem from the team’s recent elimination in the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 by CF Monterrey. The coach highlighted the need for deeper rosters to address injuries and suspensions, noting the advantage that Liga MX teams currently hold over MLS counterparts due to roster rules.

Inter Miami’s current Designated Player slots are occupied by Leonardo Campana, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi, highlighting the team’s financial commitments to key players. Additionally, the salary cap restrictions, including the contributions of players like Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba towards the total salary capacity of $683,750 this year, pose challenges for potential signings like Di María.

While acknowledging the need to offload certain players to generate allocation money and create salary cap space for new acquisitions, Martino hinted at future opportunities in the upcoming transfer window. With the transfer book set to reopen in mid-July, Inter Miami remains open to exploring possibilities to enhance the team’s roster and performance in the 2024 MLS season and Leagues Cup tournament.

As Inter Miami leads the Eastern Conference table with 21 points in 11 games, Martino emphasized the team’s reliance on existing players for the ongoing season. Despite the challenges posed by roster limitations, Martino remains optimistic about the potential for improvements and strategic moves in the transfer market. With upcoming matches against teams like the New York Red Bulls, Inter Miami continues to pursue success on the field while navigating the constraints of Major League Soccer’s roster regulations.
